These Top 5 Japanese dishes serve to be the most difficult for non-Japanese (foreigners) to gobble down. While some have tried and succeed, there still remains most of us with more sensitive stomachs.

1. BASASHI

The kanji “ba” stands for horse while “sashi” means to cut. Put them together and you’ll get raw horse meat. This dish is rare and can only be found in highly expensive Izakaya restaurants. It’s probably the most challenging taste for a western to swallow.
2. NATTO

A favorite Japanese delight, but known to be unpopular among Japan travelers for it’s odor and slimy texture. Natto is fermented soy beans that is normally eaten with rice and Shoyu sauce.
3. TAKO ICE CREAM

The word Tako” means octopus. In japan Tako comes in many forms such as: Dumplings, dried, raw and even ice cream. Apparently Tako ice cream is filled with little pieces of octopus skin and meat.
4. WASP CRACKER

You may know of the popular Japanese rice cracker called “Senbei”, However this one has a "chilling" filling. Packed with dried wasps makes this rice crack high in protein. This strange snack is generally on sale in Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
5. IKURA

Available at any sushi restaurant in Japan is the well known fish eggs. Actually Ikura is the fully-ripe ovaries of a salmon and ranges from dark orange to reddish-orange in color.
